I’ve am currently at the 2008 ILTA (International Legal Technology Assn) Conference and hope to do some blogging while I am here.  The session that I am sitting in at present is the second session of the KM Peer Group and focuses on managing associate workload based on expertise rather than whoever the partners could corner. 

Kathleen Cain has already done a great job of describing how Winston & Strawn developed a system for experience management including how they developed their taxonomy. 

Stan Wasylyk, formerly of Foley & Lardner – now with the Michael Farrell Group, described the system Foley recently put in place that included a rating system that was used to grade the associates level of experience in particular types of matters, practice areas, etc.

The rest of this post will be dedicated to reporting on Doug Cornelius’ presentation.  I really can’ t compete with his reporting from the conference (which I saw him doing while on the podium waiting to speak), so I thought I would report on Doug’s contribution to the conference.

Goodwin Proctor hired staffing managers who assign associates to matters.   They moved from monthly report that would provide information on who was available to work.   They now have a workload a system called iStaff that showed the active assignments, expected time out of office, comments from the associates. expressed interests, profile calendar of time out, etc. for each associate.  Staffing managers use this to make the assignments.  The system also provides reporting. 

The system also includes Experience Search which searches biography and matter information.  Those using it are able to search for specific types of work.  While the Biography of each attorney has some information, the matter description, which provides more specifics on the matters worked on than the information in the biographies.

A great program.
